Both clothes and glasses have a size, and it is no less important than the appropriate size of the clothes we wear. Like clothing that fits us as a "gift", glasses can also be ill-fitting.
That's why we're going to give you some guidelines for choosing the right glasses size, both offline and online.
Choosing the right size glasses in optics
It's relatively easy here as you also have experienced opticians on hand to guide you in case you're having trouble.
But if you don't want anyone to interfere with your choice, there is 5 things, to look at to make sure your glasses are the right size. The rules apply whether you choose sunglasses or a prescription frame.
There should be no more than a finger distance between the temple and the handle.
With a plastic frame, the nose piece molding must fit your nose as this cannot be adjusted. Glasses with removable temples are subject to correction. You can see more on the topic in the article: types of frames
The curve at the end of the handle should fit your ears, not behind them, not in front of them. In most cases, this curve is subject to correction.
The bottom of the glasses should not rest on your cheeks. To be sure, in this rule, smile in the mirror and watch if the glasses do not rise. If this happens, then these glasses are not the best for you.
It is recommended that your eye is in the middle of the glass.
Choosing the right size glasses online
It may seem more complicated here, but it is not. Online, it is necessary to pay attention to the following indicators to ensure that when you receive your new glasses, they will meet all the rules listed above.
And these are:
- Frame width
- Depth of glass
- Length of handle
How is the frame width calculated?
As previously mentioned, an appropriately sized pair of glasses is one where there is no more than a finger distance between the temple and the handle. And this is where the width of the frame comes in. There are sites where this is calculated, and if not you can do it yourself. The size of the glasses is called the boxing system, written on the inside of one of the handles. It includes the width of the glass, the width of the nosepiece and the length of the handle.
You can approximate the total width by multiplying the width of the glass by two and adding the value of the nosecone.
For example:
52 mm ( the size of one glass)
+ 52 mm (the size of the other glass)
+ 16 mm (bridge size)
= 120 mm (frame width)
Note that a frame width (sunglasses) calculated in this way does not indicate its actual width to the millimeter. Remember that the width of the glass does not include the thickness of the frame in which the lenses lie.
If the frame is plastic this may be another 2-3 mm on each side added to the overall width of the frame.
Now let's get into the details.
Width of glass
This is the first digit of the size written on the handle (52) . It shows the horizontal width of each glass at its widest point.
If you are choosing a dioptric frame online, multiply your prescription distance (PD) by two and you will get the width that would be appropriate for your face. With a frame this size, you won't have a case of diopter glasses either.
It is permissible to make the frame 4 mm larger.
For example: PD (interglass distance from your glasses prescription) = 62 mm.
62*2= 124 mm
A frame of this size will fit the face well without sticking out. And if its width is smaller and over 128 mm, there is a danger that it is either narrow or wide.
Width of the bridge (carrier)
The second value of the size (16) is the distance between the two panes, this is the space that fits over your nose.
The width of the bridge should be tailored to the physiological of your face, therefore if you have a narrower nose I recommend that this figure is smaller, and vice versa.
Depth of glass
Frame depth is the vertical height of the lens (glass) at its widest point.
As we have specified, one of the rules for offline purchase is that the glasses should not rest on your cheeks. You can measure this online by having the depth of the frame.
This type of indicator is very rarely found online, but you can always call your chosen online eyewear store to have it measured while they are still talking to you on the phone.
And to get an idea of this value when buying online, visualize that your eye is in the middle of the glass or the top of it, so from the pupil to contact with the face there are 22.5 mm or 30 mm left.
Length of handle
This is the last digit of the size listed on the handle of the diopter frame. It is often a three-digit number (135mm).
Handle sizes range from 120 to 150, with 125 and 130 being the most common.
